Regional Child Protection Manager, Americas and Europe Maria Vergez travelled to Trinidad & Tobago for a country visit and made a presentation to external stakeholders there on British Council Child Protection Policy.

Opening the meeting was His Excellency High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Tim Stew. Also speaking was Julian Baker, Director Caribbean and Regional Strategic Lead on Child Protection. Giving the feature address was Juliana Johan-Boodram, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Social Development and Family Affairs and closing the mornings remarks, Josaine Chin Aleong, Country Director of Trinidad & Tobago and Caribbean Exams Manager.

Following Maria’s presentation was a panel discussion with Permanent Secretary Boodram, Mark Mungal from Caribbean Sport Development Agency, Mr Scanterbury from Youth Training Centre, Beverly Paul from the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service(TTPS) Child Protection Unit, and Margaret Sampson-Brown from the TTPS Victim & Witness Support Unit.

We are happy to report the event a success! British Council proudly shared our policy and experience with local stakeholders fuelling the discussion on the current situation in Trinidad & Tobago. The audience was made up of representatives from local and international NGO’s, secondary and tertiary Academia and government agencies, including legal and law enforcement. All present made contributions and there was an open and honest discussion surrounding the concerns and challenges in the community, family, schools, and with the social and legal systems in place, to address child protection issues in Trinidad & Tobago. So informative, exciting and passionate were the discussions that we found ourselves drawing the meeting to a close at mid-day!

British Council was pleased to have been instrumental in bringing such a diverse and dynamic group of organisations and individuals together and look forward to cooperating with such entities as we deliver our programme in Trinidad & Tobago that will involve working with children.
